MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid mitochondrial-derived peptide, encoded not in nuclear DNA but within the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene — one of a small group of peptides the mitochondria themselves produce. It is supplied as a lyophilised powder in a sealed vial for laboratory and in-vitro research.

Research Focus

MOTS-c is studied primarily as a metabolic regulator. Published research has examined its activation of AMPK, the cellular energy sensor; insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism; exercise capacity, where studies in aged mice reported improved physical performance; and mitochondrial function and metabolic homeostasis during ageing. It is one of the peptides that connects mitochondrial biology to whole-body metabolism, which is why it appears so often in longevity research.
